At the end of my grandmother’s life, she was placed in Haven Hospice in Edison, New Jersey. Inspired by the care and compassion of the hospice workers and the memory of my grandmother, I felt compelled to help a local hospice in my community. From September of 2010 to January 9th, 2011, I organized a Prom Fashion Show that was held at the Wallenpaupack Area High School.
I had to use many communications skills to plan this event. I wrote announcements for the schools morning news reports, made and distributed flyers and started and maintained a Facebook event page. I had to work cooperatively with many businesses who donated prizes to be raffled off at the event. I worked closely with the staff at Tunis Bridal Shoppe and Art’s for Him Tuxedo’s, who donated the dresses and tuxedos for the show, to plan fittings and work out the details for the event. I scheduled and coordinated rehearsals, fittings and hair & makeup appointments. I booked the venue, set up the venue and planned out the show’s schedule, music & lighting.

From July of 2011 to January 8th, 2012, I will be organizing a Prom Fashion Show which will be held at the Wallenpaupack Area High School. All of the proceeds will be benefitting the family of David Iachella. David, a 17 year old student, passed away from an extremely rare form of cancer in August of 2011. David underwent intense surgeries and treatments. David’s treatments were NOT covered by insurance. As a result the Iachella family is now suffering from financial hardship in addition to losing their son.
I again used the same communications skills I had used for the 2011 show. This year to garner more interest in the show, I expanded my use of media by using the website, laurenryan.net that I created for college admissions and scholarships to help with promotion for the event. I contacted various local newspapers and television stations and placed ads in the local and surrounding town and city newspapers. I also expanded my donation requests to a national level. The event was a great success and $3,200 was raised to help the Iachella family.
